We do not realize it, but just as food, water, a roof over our heads, and education are so natural for us, they are not so for children in Kenya. For them, it is often a wish. They survive through mutual help and through foundations like Kumbatio.
Kumbatio (meaning 'embrace' in Swahili) shelters children in the children’s home ‘Kiota’. These children come from families where abuse, mistreatment, or abandonment occurs. Once sheltered in Kiota, they receive these basic needs, can go to school, and are guided in processing their traumas.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Building a stable future~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is important that these children can process their traumas and attend school so they can build a stable future. It is also important that the children can live with their families again. Therefore, Kumbatio also works with family members to ensure they can develop in such a way that they can provide income themselves and work on healthy family relationships.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kiota (meaning ‘nest’ in Swahili) is located in the city of Thika, about 50 km from the capital Nairobi. Children are cared for and guided here by house mothers, a house father, social workers, and psychologists. Thanks to Kumbatio, these children can go to school every day. Unlike children here in the Netherlands who sometimes do not feel like going to school, the children there always look forward to it. They realize that school is very important for their future, so they are not dependent on help from others to survive but can take care of themselves and live their lives.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Kiota Dream ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To be able to mean even more for the children in Thika, ‘The Kiota Dream’ was started. The reason for this was listening to the children and staff about what they missed and needed. We concluded that we need separate family homes and a possibility to develop skills that contribute to the self-reliance of the family. So not offering help to survive, but transferring knowledge to take care of themselves. The latter will be the ‘community training center’, a place where families are taught to take care of themselves and the rest of their family, so there is room for attention and love for their children.
